ZincShield® provides an effective stain shield to avoid ugly roof stains.

How does ZincShield® work? [ZincShield roof zinc strips prevent roof stains caused by algae, fungus, mold, moss, mildew, lichen] [ZincShield roof zinc strips prevent roof stains caused by algae, fungus, mold, moss, mildew, lichen]

ZincShield® is installed on the roof and, as it rains, ZincShield® releases zinc-ions that keep ugly roof stains, algae, moss, lichen, mildew and fungus off your roof.  These roof stains and issues can damage the roof thus shortening the life of the roof.

The results can be observed in the roof pictures to the right. Zinc coated (galvanized) flashing installed around the chimney & dormer released zinc-ions which protected these roofs below the chimney & dormer from stains. However, the rest of the roof is badly stained. Had ZincShield® been installed on the entire roof, these roofs would have remained stain free. (The type of flashing used on these roofs is not normally used anymore - it has been replaced with aluminum or rubber flashing).

What is ZincShield®?

[ZincShield roof zinc strips prevent roof stains caused by algae, fungus, mold, moss, mildew, lichen]ZincShield® is a 99.2% pure zinc strip (a trace of copper is added to provide strength and proper hardness) in 50-foot rolls. Three widths are available: 2.5", 3.5" and 6.0" (see FAQs for specific applications for each width).  ZincShield® is installed at the top of the roof (below the roof ridge vent, roof cap or below the first row of shingles) and below any obstruction such as chimneys, skylights, dormers, etc. that block the natural flow of rain water down the roof. ZincShield® will quickly weather so that the finish will have a dull, pewter-gray appearance.

Correct installation is important.  ZincShield® can be installed with nails or with an adhesive - we supply products specifically designed for each of these two methods.  Our ZincShield® Nails are of the highest quality [Special nails for ZincShield roof zinc strips] and have EPDM rubber washers that seal nail holes. These nails are designed to be rust free for the life of your roof.

Our GSP-95® Adhesive is specially formulated to provide a strong bond between ZincShield® and your roof (asphalt, composite, fiberglass, tile, concrete and slate roofs) for the life of the roof.

ZincShield® is solid zinc throughout.  Some roof protection products being sold are made of galvanized steel.  Galvanized steel is steel coated in a thin layer of zinc either by electroplating or by dipping the steel in hot molten liquid zinc. In either case, only a thin layer of zinc is present. While the zinc lasts, it will provide protection against roof stains. However, as this coating of zinc dissipates, the steel is exposed to air allowing rust to form. Not only is the zinc protection lost, but the resulting rust oxide can stain the roof red now! Also, when galvanized steel is cut to size, the cut edge exposes steel to the air thus allowing rust to occur along the length or edge where it was cut. Again, rust stains are likely.

Since ZincShield® is solid zinc, it can never rust and it will keep on protecting your roof
... for 20-years or more.

On What types of roofs can ZincShield® be applied?

Asphalt Shingled Roofs (often referred to as "Composite" Shingles)
Fiberglass Shingled Roofs
Wood Roofs
Flat Tile Roofs
Concrete Roofs

New Roofs
Old Roofs

Can ZincShield® be applied to a stained roof?

Yes, ZincShield® can be installed on a stained roof. However, it is important to note that ZincShield® may not get the roof clean, or at least it might take a long time to do so.  If your roof is currently stained or has moss, lichen., etc., it is best to clean your roof or treat it chemically (see below) before installing ZincShield®.

If my roof is currently stained, how do I get it clean?

There are three basic ways to clean your roof:

1.  Re-roof - an expensive option. Your current roof may well have more useful life.

2.  Power Wash or Brush Clean
Advantage - fast results
Disadvantage - damages the roof shingles by breaking away the granules that
protect & color the roof shortening the life of the roof.

3.  Use a Chemical Cleaner
Advantage - will not damage your roof.
Disadvantage - takes time, so patience is required.

Unless your roof is in such bad shape that the only option is re-roofing, we recommend chemical cleaning in order to avoid damaging your roof. Roof-Be-Clean® is an excellent product for this type of chemical cleaning (see www.roofbeclean.com for more details).

If you do have your roof power washed or brush cleaned, it is important that you install ZincShield® right away. Why? Because the use of power washing/brushing damages the roof and, if used, should never be used again as the roof will be ruined for sure. Thus, the roof must be protected from further organism growth so stains will not occur again.

Is there an alternative to installing ZincShield® to avoid roof stains?

[LiquidZinc prevent roof stains caused by algae, fungus, mold, moss, mildew, lichen] Yes. We developed a product, LiquidZinc®, to do just that.    LiquidZinc® works the same way that ZincShield® works by coating the roof with zinc-ions that keeps the roof clean - free of stains, algae, moss, lichen and mildew. LiquidZinc® is a color-free, zinc-ion rich formula developed to meet common situations that we have encountered.

LiquidZinc® provides a solution to the following issues:

1.  It takes time for the zinc-ions from ZincShield® to cover the entire roof and immediate protection is desired.
Solution: Install ZincShield® to protect the entire roof for the long term and apply LiquidZinc® at the same time for instant total roof protection.

2.  There are small areas of my roof that need protection but I don’t want to install ZincShield® above these small areas.
Solution: Install ZincShield® as normal to protect the main areas of the roof. To protect the small areas, apply LiquidZinc® to these areas initially as well as at 12 – 18 months intervals as preventative maintenance.

3.  I don’t want to put zinc strips on my roof at all. How do I protect my roof from ugly roof stains?
Solution: Use LiquidZinc® instead of ZincShield®. Apply LiquidZinc® immediately to the entire roof and reapply each 12 – 18 months to keep your roof clean - no roof stains.

LiquidZinc® is applied with an ordinary garden pump sprayer. Dilute as directed.
